Our area is blessed with five primary schools within easy reach. Four are in Old Lodge Lane itself and the fifth, the Hayes, is a short walk away through Whitefield Avenue.

New Valley

new valley

Our nearest neighbour is New Valley, where we have close connections with head Pete Steward and the staff and pupils. The school choir often performs at OLLBC events and New Valley was the scene of a memorable open air jam session by US band WithLove in 2017.

Formerly known as Wattenden Primary, New Valley opened as a new school in 2014 as part of the Chipstead Valley Academy Trust. It has around 180 pupils. Admissions are handled through the London Borough of Croydon.

Ofsted Report

Beaumont Primary School had an amazing 2018. It was rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted, Croydon Council chose it as their Primary School of the Year, and it was the top performing school in Croydon for the second year running. Not a bad way to celebrate the school’s 50th anniversary.

Historically Beaumont has a close association with St Barnabas church in Higher Drive. The school has room for 213 pupils and attracts a full complement. Admissions are handled through the London Borough of Croydon.

Reedham Park

reedham park

Between New Valley and Beaumont is Reedham Park, tucked away up a narrow side lane. Established in 1932 by the redoubtable Miss Inez Routledge, for many years it was the only school in the road.

An independent fee-paying school, it has some 80 pupils. It has been closely associated with St John the Baptist church in Dale Road since Miss Routledge’s 65 years as head, though pupils come from a wide range of faiths. Admissions are by application direct to the school.

St Nicholas

St Nicholas is a special community school for boys and girls aged 4 to 11 with moderate learning difficulties and autism. It sits alongside Beaumont School on the large site originally occupied by Reedham Orphanage in the 19th century.

In late 2018 major building works started which will greatly increase the school’s capacity. At present there is space for 132 pupils and there is considerable pressure on admissions. Croydon Council propose raising the capacity to 224 by 2024/25. Admissions are through Croydon SEN Department.

The Hayes

Several Old Lodge Lane children attend the fifth local primary school, The Hayes in Hayes Lane. A large modern school which has won several architectural awards, it has its own swimming pool, pond, gardening area, spacious field and a large playground.

There are around 400 children on the roll. If approached via the footpath at the top of Whitefield Avenue, the school is a few hundred yards away from Old Lodge Lane. By car, however, local geography requires a journey of some two miles. Admissions are through the London Borough of Croydon.
