ACTIVITIES & EVENTS
Our mission is to the community, and we have a lively mix of events run by ourselves and by external organisations and individuals.
As well as our regular Sunday service, we have special services for baptisms and other landmark occasions.
In 2019 those are likely to include a date or two around our 60th anniversary on 7 July, as well as annual events like Carols by Candlelight in December.
We also join other churches in Purley and Kenley from time to time for joint services of prayer, worship, praise and celebration.
Every second Thursday evening we enjoy a proper sit-down community meal. Everyone is invited.
Each Thursday Tea has a different theme. We don’t charge anyone, but we do encourage people to bring a dish of their own.
Our guests come from a kaleidoscope of different countries and backgrounds, so we cater for dietary needs including Halal, vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free.
Hugely popular events, especially with the youngsters. The highlight is usually the annual Light Party alternative to Halloween on 31 October.
The Rock Stars party in 2018 was the essence of cool, and the Movie Stars party the previous year was an absolute stunner, darling. Check out the pictures in the Galleries section.
Other parties are held at different times depending on the occasion.
Pump up the bouncy castle, light the barbecue and pray we’ll have good weather.
Fun Days bring the whole community together. We start in April/late March with the Easter Fun Day, and close the summer with another one on August Bank Holiday.
In between we have one-off events for special visitors from overseas. In 2019 we welcome withLove from Baltimore USA. There could be music involved…
We often partner with local organisations to reach out to our wider community, particularly our older folk.
We recently staged a Pensioners Tea alongside Croydon Council, which built on the success of an amazing 2017 Vintage Tea Party organised by the Big Love Foundation, a charity run by Patti, one of our core team.
OLLBC hosts some of the CAP Croydon South training courses. We also run our own courses or provide facilities for third party speakers.
Our recent course on Living With Depression, spread over four weekends, spoke to many and the accompanying booklet was well received. Click on the link or the picture to view (pdf, opens in new tab).
Once a month on a Saturday evening it’s time for the OLLBC Wine Club.
Members gather responsibly at the home of Richard and Ann to discover and enjoy some fine wines, excellent company and unique fellowship.
Speak to Richard or Ann if you’d like to join. There is a small contribution to cover the cost of consumables.
Diamond anniversary celebrations include a Thanksgiving Service and afternoon tea planned for 6 July, followed by an evening concert at Christ Church featuring WithLove and comedy magician John Archer.
Thursday Tea has a special Easter Eggstravaganza on 18 April, and a new Kidz Klub starts up after Easter.
