NOW WE ARE 60
Diamond Anniversary Thanksgiving Service
On 6 July 2019 we celebrated 60 years as a church with a Thanksgiving service attended by members past and present, together with guests from the wider church community.
Deacon Nigel Davidson, manager of the Christians Against Poverty Croydon South branch which works closely with OLLBC, introduced the speakers:
Carol Russell, who first attended in 1956 and recalled stories of Mr and Mrs Vail’s Sunday School, from which OLLBC was born, and the church’s early years;
James Collins, Senior Pastor at Purley Baptist Church which has had close links with OLLBC since before it even existed;
Phil Barnard, Regional Minister and Team Leader of the London Baptist Association, representing the extended Baptist family, who commended OLLBC for “punching above its weight”, and
Nick Graves, Pastor of Old Lodge Lane Baptist, who spoke of the church’s mission to the whole community and our desire for everyone to thrive, feel welcome, find healing, experience freedom and continue to learn.
After prayers led by Marilyn Webb, chair of Churches Together in Purley and Kenley, and the closing hymn How Great Thou Art, led by visiting US band withLove and the OLLBC worship team, guests adjourned to the small hall for afternoon tea and cake.
In the evening we celebrated at Christ Church with local Purley band The Imposters, plus comedy, magic and a little ukulele from Britain’s Got Talent semi-finalist John Archer, and a storming set from US band and old friends withLove, playing the final gig on their 2019 European Mission Tour.
